It's frustrating to see friends complain about the high cost of housing in SF, when the very things they suggest to combat it (rent control, building restrictions) are the main reasons that housing in SF is so expensive in the first place.
It doesn't have to be that way. Japanese cities have similarly restrictive geography--and have faced similar growth pressures--yet housing prices have remained flat.
